More than 90 years after its debut, Converse is bringing back the legendary Jack Purcell through its prestigious First String franchise. Originally introduced in 1935 and designed by badminton champion Jack Purcell, the low-profile sneaker has evolved from a performance essential into a timeless cultural icon worn by athletes, musicians, actors, and creatives around the world.
A Court Classic Rebuilt for Modern Wear
Rather than simply reissuing the original, Converse has completely reconstructed the Jack Purcell from the ground up. As part of the brand’s premium First String line, the sneaker combines archival inspiration with elevated craftsmanship to create its most refined version yet.
Available in White and Mountain Green, the updated silhouette features a premium leather upper built on a revised last with a wider forefoot for improved comfort and fit. Underfoot, a Vibram outsole enhances durability and traction, while a molded sockliner equipped with CX foam and Nike Air technology delivers modern cushioning without sacrificing the shoe’s classic profile.
Heritage Details Meet Premium Construction
Every detail pays tribute to the rich history of the Jack Purcell. The heel license plate revives the signature 1970s-era JP script and wedge logo, while the upper stitching mirrors design cues from mid-1970s models. The slightly higher collar, shorter toe cap, and recessed vent eyelets all reference vintage editions from the 1970s and 1980s.
Premium finishing touches further elevate the sneaker, including vintage-inspired laces with metal aglets, beveled eyelets, a reinforced midsole tape, and a tongue lace keeper for improved stability. Of course, the famous “Smiler” toe remains, now subtly refined with a modern rubber inlay that preserves the silhouette’s unmistakable identity.

The launch highlights the philosophy behind Converse First String, the brand’s pinnacle craftsmanship franchise that revisits iconic models using premium materials and meticulous construction. Each release is produced in limited quantities using carefully sourced materials, reinforcing the collection’s emphasis on quality and heritage.
The premium direction was recently showcased through a custom First String Jack Purcell Player Edition worn by Jannik Sinner following his Italian Open victory, celebrating Converse’s long-standing connection to racquet sports.
The Converse First String Jack Purcell will launch globally on September 8 via Converse and select retailers, with additional colorways and styles arriving in the months ahead.
