Nike is introducing Apex, its most advanced marathon racing shoe yet, designed for athletes chasing every possible second on race day. The new model brings together a radically engineered Air Zoom platform, new ZoomX LT foam and a redesigned carbon fiber Flyplate in Nike’s latest expression of racing speed.
What to know
- Nike Apex uses four Air Zoom units arranged in two double-stacked pairs.
- Nike claims up to 40% more energy return than Alphafly 3 in a men’s size 10.
- The shoe features a zero-drop, 40mm stack height from heel to forefoot.
- Its construction combines ZoomX LT foam, a carbon fiber Flyplate and Flyknit X.
- Nike Apex will launch in January 2027 via Nike.com and select retailers.
Four Air Zoom Units for Maximum Energy Return
The defining feature of Nike Apex is its double-stacked Air Zoom setup. The shoe uses four Air Zoom units arranged in two stacked pairs, delivering the most Air ever used in the forefoot of a Nike running shoe. Nike says the platform can provide up to 40% more energy return than the Alphafly 3 in a men’s size 10, while the shoe weighs more than 10% less.

A Zero-Drop Racing Platform
Apex takes a different approach to marathon geometry with a zero-drop, 40mm stack height from heel to forefoot. The platform combines cushioning and impact protection with a highly responsive ride, while a wider outsole and rocker geometry are designed to improve stability and forward momentum as fatigue sets in.
Underfoot, the Air Zoom system sits within a new bed of ZoomX LT, a race-specific foam that Nike says is softer, lighter and provides greater energy return than ZoomX. A raised, inverse-wave carbon fiber Flyplate works with the Air units to direct loading while supporting forward drive and stability.

Built Around the Marathon
The upper uses lightweight Flyknit X, alongside a fitted knit collar and sock liner-free construction for a minimal, glove-like fit. A GOATEK and Fast Shot outsole places traction and durability where they are needed while keeping unnecessary weight down.

Nike athlete Jacob Kiplimo has already raced in Apex prototypes, including during his half marathon world record in Lisbon and his fastest-ever marathon in London. His testing reflects Nike’s broader approach of developing its racing technology through athlete feedback and research at the Nike Sport Research Lab.

Nike’s Next Racing Flagship
Apex joins Nike’s wider race-day footwear system alongside the Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly, but its role is clear: it sits at the extreme end of Nike’s performance spectrum, designed for marathoners looking to push the limits of speed and efficiency.

Nike Apex will be available in January 2027 at Nike.com and select retail locations.
