Tomo Koizumi Transforms the Air Superfly
Tomo Koizumi, recognized worldwide for his extravagant ruffle gowns and fearless use of color, reimagines the Nike Air Superfly as a sleek yet dramatic expression of modern sport. The silhouette, originally a low-profile racing trainer from 2000, now becomes a canvas for experimentation. Its lenticular upper and tongue logo shift colors with light, ensuring constant visual dynamism, while the multicolor outsole recalls track spike detailing from early 2000s sprint footwear.
“The Nike Air Superfly is a beautiful canvas for both artistic and athletic expression,” says Tomo. “My vision was to create a distinctive, versatile silhouette that merges running-inspired design, personalization, and evocative materials and colors to allow the shoe to take on different personalities depending on how women want to style it that day.”
Customization as Creative Freedom
Central to the design is personalization. Tomo introduces three interchangeable Swooshes — including playful ruffle options in multicolor and black — that invite wearers to treat the sneaker as a creative accessory. Multiple lace setups provide further flexibility, allowing athletes and fashion-forward individuals to create volume or streamline their look. With Tomo’s logo printed on the sockliner, the sneaker is both performance gear and a work of wearable art.

Campaign with Powerful Female Athletes
To tell this story, Nike assembled a campaign featuring Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the legendary Jamaican sprinter; Masai Russell, a rising Olympic gold medalist; and Arie Aoki, a Japanese sprinter representing the next wave of talent. Their inclusion reflects Tomo’s commitment to femininity, power, and boundary-breaking style.

“Athletes like Shelly-Ann redefine what it means to be unapologetically stylish and feminine while also being fiercely strong and performing at the highest level,” notes Tomo. “It inspires me to see how they can both push their athletic limits and express themselves through fashion, breaking boundaries in sport and self-expression.”

Couture Meets Sport for a Global Launch
The Air Superfly has always been linked to speed and precision. In Koizumi’s hands, however, it becomes something greater. The sneaker now acts as a bridge between performance footwear and high fashion. With lenticular materials, ruffled Swooshes, and a bold personality, it steps into the cultural conversation around individuality and self-expression in sport.

The Nike x Tomo Koizumi Air Superfly will first launch on September 19 at Dover Street Market Ginza and select retail partners in Japan, before a global release on September 20 through SNKRS and Nike’s retail network.
