The New Balance ABZORB 1890 marks a new chapter in the brand’s lifestyle evolution, merging archival performance cues with expressive, visible technology.
Heritage DNA Meets Visible ABZORB Technology
With the New Balance ABZORB 1890, the Boston-based brand expands its celebrated ABZORB cushioning family. Although the silhouette feels futuristic, it is deeply rooted in the archive. Most notably, it utilizes the original 2002 sole unit, equipped with full-length SBS ABZORB cushioning. This setup delivers the plush, impact-absorbing comfort long associated with the technology, while maintaining structural integrity and a streamlined profile.

However, this is not a simple retro revival. Instead, the model reframes heritage through a contemporary design lens. The tooling provides a technical foundation, yet the upper introduces an entirely new visual language that feels progressive and dynamic.
890v3 Influence and Futuristic Design Details
The upper design draws direct inspiration from the 890v3, a performance runner that now stands as an archival reference within the New Balance ecosystem. A no-sew wave cutout pattern overlays exposed mesh, creating a sense of motion across the lateral and medial panels. This layered construction enhances breathability while reinforcing the shoe’s technical aesthetic.

Additionally, high-frequency welded reflective “teardrops” at the forefront inject a futuristic edge. These elements not only amplify visibility but also underline the model’s commitment to visible tech as a core design statement rather than a hidden feature.

James Lee, Lead Designer at New Balance, emphasized the balance required when modernizing archival silhouettes: “For projects that reference archival models, a lot of the design process is focused on refining and improving existing elements without losing what made them special in the first place… I actually used to run in the 890v3 when it was on the market, so having the opportunity to modernize a silhouette I’m personally familiar with made the process especially fun and meaningful.”
Campaign Energy: Wolmido, Incheon
The campaign, shot by photographer Nikolai Ahn, positions the sneaker against the vibrant backdrop of Wolmido, Incheon, just outside Seoul. This cultural nucleus provides a dynamic contrast between playful urban energy and restorative natural scenery, visually echoing the shoe’s balance between heritage and innovation.
