The OTW by Vans x FDMTL collaboration brings traditional Japanese techniques to the forefront of modern sneaker design.

A Deep Dive into Japanese Denim Artistry

Founded in Tokyo by Gaku Tsuyoshi in 2005, FDMTL (Fundamental) has gained a global reputation. This is due to its exceptional approach to Japanese denimboro, and sashiko stitching. The brand’s collections are handcrafted in Japan. They focus on intricate distressing, patchwork, and visible mending, which reflect the heritage of traditional workwear. Furthermore, FDMTL embraces the philosophy of wabi-sabi, celebrating the beauty of imperfection. As a result, its garments age gracefully over time.

While firmly rooted in Japanese textile traditions, FDMTL continuously bridges the gap between past and present, combining artisanal methods with contemporary silhouettes. With a history of standout collaborations, the brand has partnered with like-minded labels like Vans that value authenticity, quality, and storytelling.

Celebrating the Sixth Chapter Together

In their sixth collaboration, OTW by Vans and FDMTL elevate their partnership to new heights. This collection draws inspiration from sashiko, a traditional form of Japanese decorative stitching. Moreover, it incorporates Engineered Knit technology, which helps blend handcrafted aesthetics with a modern touch. As a result, this fusion showcases both brands’ dedication to innovation while honoring their rich heritage.

The collection introduces two refined models: the Old Skool 36 EK and the Half Cab 33 EK. Both silhouettes are updated with true white sashiko-style stitching, punched eyelets, and carefully selected color accents. The Old Skool features a Citadel blue outsole paired with Marshmallow foxing, while the Half Cab is marked with a custom FDMTL woven hang flag, nodding to the brand’s deep cultural roots.

Footwear as a Cultural Canvas

With OTW by Vans continuing to push design boundaries, this collaboration allows FDMTL to showcase Japanese craft in a fresh way. These aren’t just sneakers—they’re modern artifacts, combining traditional aesthetics with forward-thinking design. The use of Engineered Knit elevates texture and comfort, while retaining the soul of sashiko.

The OTW by Vans x FDMTL collection launched on May 30 and is available now at vans.com/otw.
