Neighborhood have carved out a unique niche for themselves thanks to their blend of high fashion construction standards, technical expertise, and an immersive background in motorcycle culture. For Fall 2018, long term collaborative partners Neighborhood and Adidas Consortium rekindle their twinned creative energies for a unique interpretation of the 1980s casual subculture that made its home on the terraces of Britain.
The flash and sleek sportswear that made up the foundation of casual fashion is infused with military and motorcycle inspiration in the form of a palette heavy with black and olive, gothic lettering. If the Old English script looks familiar, that’s because the project has also enlisted California artist and designer Cali Thornhill DeWitt, whose work on a certain 2016 tour merchandise collection had large portions of the world feeling like Pablo. DeWitt has also contributed a crosshairs target graphic that updates the classic RAF roundel adopted by mods into the more directly aggressive tone of the terraces.
The collection’s footwear consists of the new Kamanda silhouette, the iconic Stan Smith, and the contemporary update of classic running styles, the I-5923. Two variants of the Kamanda, in black and olive, feature tonal colorways, a new asymmetrical lacing structure, and Neighborhood text branding. The Stan Smith opts for something of an understated approach, with a rich leather, olive upper, updated Boost sole, debossed Neighborhood text across the outside of the shoe, and the addition of DeWitt to the familiar endorsement image on the tongue. The I-5923 sticks with its knit upper, rendered in combat ready tones of olive and tan, along with the subtle placement of Neighborhood’s initials at the heels.
The apparel component features track tops, track pants, hoodies, long and short sleeve t-shirts, instilled with the signature style of Neighborhood. Neighborhood’s ‘NHBD’ initials, DeWitt’s target graphic, and an automotive style patch are applied across these essentials, for a modern retelling that stays true to the concrete roots of its casual inspiration.
